5.21.14 – One of those days…

21 May

Well hey… it’s been a while! Pretty hard to believe we are already coming up on Memorial Day weekend, and it’s going to be jam-packed with fun. So I thought I would do a quick post before  we hit the road.

One thing I’ve strived to do more of lately: lower my expectations. Lower my expectations of what the day will bring, what I will get accomplished, and my toddler’s behavior. This may sound a little debby-downer. I probably should phrase it as setting more realistic expectations. It’s pretty easy to get stressed out staying home with a toddler, trying to start a business, maintaining the house and finances, and keeping up with family and social obligations. When I simply focus on what HAS to be done today (pay a bill that’s due, keep my child happy/healthy, or make it to an appointment) and look at the rest of my to-do list (showering) as bonus if it gets accomplished, I tend to be a lot less stressed out. (I’m kidding… I usually shower thanks to Barney and Baby Bop.)

My husband gave me some advice after Laney was born. He said, “Take all of the things you want to get done today and divide them by two.” And almost two years later I’m starting to listen. 🙂 But it’s not always easy on weeks like this one… getting ready to travel, photo shoots, hosting events, and a couple of birthdays on top of the normal routine can be a challenge. Especially when you have one of those days where you feel like you are cleaning up unexpected mess after mess. And I’m not talking picking up toys or wiping up after breakfast…

I’m talking about enjoying a little morning bath time with my girl when she says “stinky.” And when I look, there are several brown “boats” floating around with her bath toys.

Luckily, she told me. I was so busy trying to get cute pictures of her that I wouldn’t have immediately realized she had a surprise for me.

Later, I made a healthy lunch choice. Laney decided she wanted to share (big surprise), and I was happy to give her some of my meat and veggies. She then proceeded to accidentally dump the entire plate on the floor. Sometimes you have to take a deep breath and think about all the good things that happened today…playing with poms, splashing in the water table, and having an outdoor dance party to name a few.

So, I’m a little pooped (ha!) and really hungry. I have many more items left on my have-to-do list and bonus-to-do list. But in the spirit of lowering my expectations, I decided to share pictures of my cutie and vent to you instead of tackling my list. 🙂 I have to remind myself that everyone feels too busy, but it’s up to me to enjoy today.

Hope your Memorial Day weekend exceeds all of your expectations!
