12.11.11 – Top Ten Things We’ve Learned So Far

11 Dec

In reflecting on our first week living in Pennsylvania, we were recapping all of the things we have learned about our new home.  Here are our top ten:

1. A turnpike is a tollway.  They have a ticket toll system.  You get a ticket at the first toll booth and you pay at the toll booth when you exit the turnpike.  And it isn’t cheap…

2. A license plate is a “tag.”  The tag system is privatized.

3. You pay for the bus when you get off – not when you get on.

4. Most restaurants are BYOB due to the PA liquor restrictions.  You also have to buy liquor at a distribution center or bar – you can’t get it in grocery stores.

5. Everything starts and ends later here – work, rush hour, dinner, etc.

6. “Good, good, good” is a common phrase.

7. Pittsburgh left. The first left-turning vehicle takes precedence over vehicles going straight through an intersection. This occurs on streets with no left turn lane to save the rest of traffic waiting for the car to turn left.

8. You have to ask for drink refills – even water usually.  Waiters/waitresses will not regularly fill your drinks for you.

9. There are deer EVERYWHERE!  Kyle loves that he gets to see deer out of his office window most days.

10. Shopping in Delaware. If you want liquor or higher-priced items, you shop in Delaware (no sales tax).

We have had a few “newbie” experiences, but we are learning the ropes.  🙂

Wow I only knew about the everything being later and the deer. Everything else sounds like things you’d have to get used to…. Keep the blogs coming!

Ha! This list is partially true in georgia too. Especially with the liqour…and your pittsburgh left makes me wonder about a driving maneuver yesterday. 🙂 glad to see you are loving it!
